This course explores the two key rules of US privacy law as it relates to healthcare: The Privacy Rule and the Security Rule in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA, 1996). Students will learn the scope and impact of these Rules and how to properly manage compliance with them. The focus of this course is to understand the intent and background of HIPAA, the key characteristics and requirements of the two Rules, and to examine the reach and impact of these Rules not only on healthcare providers, but on a very wide variety of upstream and downstream businesses, and on patients themselves. Students will learn best practices in implementing HIPAA compliance plans.
