Richard had 30 years of industry management experience in every phase of global supply chain management including order processing, purchasing, logistics, materials control, purchasing, production planning, industrial engineering, inventory management, project management, and sales services in military, manufacturing, logistics, and consulting organizations. Companies he has worked for or with includes US Air Force, Intel, HP, Samsung, Del Monte, Colgate, Southern Pacific, National Semiconductor, US Borax, Bio Rad, Cisco Systems, and Georgia Pacific. Richard had experience in consulting with Ernst & Young and other organizations on large supply chain reengineering, systems-based performance improvement, and numerous research and process improvement projects. He was the Executive Director of the Fritz Institute of Global Logistics, a non-profit organization dedicated to acquisition, creation, distribution, and application of knowledge to improve global logistics operations. Here he was fortunate to work with leading international companies such as Intel, Lucent Technologies, and Caterpillar Logistics and leading academic institutions such as the Stanford Supply Chain Management Forum, Georgetown, University of Nevada-Reno, Arizona State University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Richard is active in local and national professional organizations. He is a past president of the local chapters of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and the American Society of Transportation and Logistics (ASTL). He was an early contributor to the Supply Chain Council’s Supply Chain Operations Readiness (SCOR) model. He is currently an advisor cabinet member of the Biotech Supply Management Association. He holds a certification from AST&L and an Interstate Commerce Commission practitioner’s license. Richard was selected as one of 50 ‘Top Supply Chain Professionals to Know’ by a leading professional publication in 2013.
Richard became a full-time faculty member in the Ageno School of Business at GGU in 1998, after teaching for three years as an adjunct. He is the director of the ‘award winning’ undergraduate Operations & Supply Chain Management (OPSCM) and the graduate Global Supply Chain Management (GSCM) Programs. He also teaches the core supply chain course in both the undergrad BSB and graduate MBA programs. In fall 2021, the undergraduate OPSCM program was selected as the best university on-line program in the US. He founded the OPSCM Competency Center at GGU to promote professional development in the field among students, faculty, alumni, and industry. Richard has also taught continuing education courses for CSU East Bay and UC Berkeley’s Worldwide Programs. He taught professional certification courses at Genentech, Clif Bar, Ghirardelli Chocolate, FormFactor, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. He has many published articles in refereed journals and trade magazines. He also wrote a book on supply chain IT in 1993 that was one chapter of his dissertation.
