When John J. Davids (JD ’65) enrolled at Golden Gate University’s School of Law, he was determined to build a future through education while balancing the realities of work and life. Like many Golden Gate students of his era, attending law school during the day was not an option. Evening classes made a legal education possible, and Golden Gate offered a pathway that stood apart from other schools he considered.
“It was a small school, but I got a great legal education and was able to pass the bar and practice law,” John said. “When I look back on my time at GGU, I’m grateful for the people I met and the education I received. It was a great experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
After graduating in 1965, John built a successful professional career while remaining connected to the university that helped launch it. His appreciation for Golden Gate’s role in his life inspired him to create the John J. Davids Endowed Law Scholarship, helping high-achieving law students with financial need pursue their legal education.
John’s commitment to Golden Gate continued throughout his lifetime. He was recognized on the university’s Centennial Wall for his cumulative generosity and was a proud member of the Bridge Society, honoring those who have included Golden Gate University in their estate plans.
Following his recent passing, John’s legacy of generosity lives on through a $100,000 bequest gift designated to further strengthen the John J. Davids Endowed Law Scholarship. His gift will help future generations of Golden Gate law students access the education, mentorship, and opportunities that meant so much to him.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara, and by the many students whose lives will be touched through the scholarship that bears his name. His story is a testament to the lasting impact of gratitude and the power of giving back to the institution that helped make a career, a community, and a lifetime of accomplishments possible.
If Golden Gate University played a meaningful role in your life, consider how a planned gift can help create opportunities for future students while honoring your own Golden Gate story.
