Planned Giving

Create a lasting statement of your commitment to the university’s mission through planned giving: the promise of future support to Golden Gate University through your will, beneficiary designations of a retirement or investment account, or gifts that pay you income like a Charitable Gift Annuity.

LEAVING YOUR LEGACY

Planned Giving Gift Ideas

Year-end giving is as easy as making a charitable gift, and saving taxes. We’d like to make it even easier with this primer on some of the best ways to save — and give.

Below is a brief introduction to some of the best tax-advantaged methods of giving. We would be pleased to provide you with further information.

Gifts Through Your Will

Whether you are writing your will for the first time or revising your existing plans, including Golden Gate University is a simple way to make a lasting impact. In your will, you can name Golden Gate University the beneficiary of a set dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a percentage of your residual estate after you have taken care of your loved ones.

Gifts of Stock

Year-end may be an excellent time to consider a gift of stock. Giving long-term appreciated stock offers you a two-fold tax saving. First, you avoid paying any capital gains tax on the increase in the value of your stock. In addition, you receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock. For income tax purposes the value of such gifts may be deducted up to 30% of adjusted gross income, with an additional five-year carry forward.

Gifts of Real Estate

If you have owned your home, vacation home, acreage, or farm for many years, a charitable gift of that real estate can be especially tax advantageous. The property may have so appreciated in value over the years that its sale would result in a sizeable capital gains tax. If given to Golden Gate University instead, you avoid the tax and, at the same time, realize a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the real estate. For income tax purposes the value of such gifts may be deducted up to 30% of adjusted gross income, with an additional five-year carry forward.

Gifts of Life Insurance

If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, consider it as the perfect vehicle for a year-end charitable gift. To receive a charitable deduction, name us Golden Gate University both the owner and beneficiary of the policy. If the policy has a cash value, you can take a charitable deduction approximately equal to the cash value or the adjusted basis.

Life Income Gifts

If you are considering a major gift, your gift of cash or stock in the form of a “life income gift” can significantly increase your income. A life income gift can allow you to increase your income for life; receive a generous charitable contribution deduction in the tax year; and if you contribute stock, avoid any capital gains tax on the appreciation.

IRA Charitable Rollover

This provision allows those 70½ and older to donate as much as $100,000 of IRA account assets each year directly to one or more public charities. The donations will count as part of the IRA owner’s required annual payout.

A UNIQUE HISTORY

The Bridge Society

The Bridge Society was founded by a small group of alumni in 1997 to acknowledge benefactors who have included Golden Gate University in their estate plans. Members are honored with special recognition, including an annual winter holiday lunch hosted by the university’s president, a dedicated newsletter, and acknowledgement in annual donor honor rolls.

Alumni and friends who care deeply about Golden Gate University create a significant impact by including the university in their estate plans.

Through The Bridge Society, we are pleased to recognize those who have taken this special step through legacy gifts. Its exclusive benefits are a gesture of appreciation by GGU.

Planned gifts to Golden Gate University are a powerful testament to the impact of the work that we do. Estate gifts can be made through wills, trusts, retirement plans and life-income arrangements. Some of these gifts cost you nothing during your lifetime — but mean a great deal to the university.

There are several types of legacy gifts:

  • GIFTS THAT ANYONE CAN MAKE NOW – without impacting cash flow, lifestyle, or family security
  • LIFE-INCOME GIFTS – that have a significant impact for GGU while increasing your income
  • GIFTS THAT PROTECT YOUR ASSETS – and substantially benefit GGU at the same time.

Among the most popular planned gifts are a bequest through a will or living trust, retirement account or plan, life insurance, charitable remainder trust, donor advised fund, appreciated stocks, and real estate. Please contact our office for more information about developing a customized giving plan.
