The Golden Gate University (GGU) Board of Directors announced the appointment of Dr. Bruce Magid as Acting President, effective May 9, 2025. With a career spanning business leadership and higher education, Dr. Magid brings a wealth of experience and a vision for GGU’s future as it continues to thrive in its mission to serve working adults and lifelong learners.
Dr. Magid’s diverse background is rooted in both the business and academic sectors. His professional journey began in the global finance arena, where he worked at Bank of America from 1977 to 1998. During his time with the bank, Dr. Magid held a variety of key positions, including leading international economic and policy research, business development, and finance. He also worked in Venezuela, Brazil, Miami, and San Francisco, gaining invaluable insight into global markets and economic trends. His time with the bank helped shape his understanding of the importance of education in fostering global leadership.
In 2000, Dr. Magid transitioned into higher education, becoming the founding Executive Director of MSU Global at Michigan State University. This role allowed him to launch over twenty degree and certificate programs, deepening his commitment to lifelong learning for working professionals. Dr. Magid continued to build his academic leadership career as the Dean of the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business at San Jose State University and later as the Dean of Brandeis University International Business School. He also served as the Executive Director of the Perlmutter Institute for Global Business Leadership, bringing a global perspective to business education.
Reflecting on his new role at GGU, Dr. Magid shared his excitement for the future of the university. “Golden Gate University’s commitment to offering accessible, flexible education for working adults is something I deeply resonate with,” said Dr. Magid. “My goal is to continue strengthening GGU’s ability to meet the needs of its students, while expanding opportunities for academic and professional growth. We’re at a crucial point in higher education, and I’m confident GGU will continue to be a beacon of opportunity for students in the Bay Area and beyond.”
As Acting President, Dr. Magid will guide the university through an important transitional period, overseeing the implementation of key strategic initiatives, including refining the academic offerings and ensuring that GGU maintains its role as a leader in accessible education. He is eager to foster partnerships that support the continued growth and impact of GGU’s programs.
Board Chair Melinda Dunn expressed full confidence in Dr. Magid’s leadership. “Dr. Magid’s extensive experience in both the academic and business worlds equips him uniquely to lead GGU through this transition,” said Dunn. “We are grateful for his willingness to step into this role, and the Board has full faith in his ability to maintain momentum and lead GGU forward as we continue our search for a permanent president. This is an exciting time for GGU, and we are thrilled to have Dr. Magid guiding us through this process.”
Dr. Magid holds a Bachelor of Science in International Relations from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, as well as a Master of Arts in International Relations and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, Business Law, and Comparative Politics, a joint program at Tufts University and Harvard University.
