On October 2, 2024, Golden Gate University’s alumni, faculty, staff, and students came together to celebrate GGU’s storied legacy in the Otto and Velia Butz Libraries. Named after GGU’s longest-serving president and his steadfast partner, the library set a fitting backdrop for an evening dedicated to honoring 123 years of educational impact and opportunity for working professionals.
President David Fike addressed the assembled community, reflecting on GGU’s enduring role as a launchpad for success. He expressed his gratitude to those who have built and sustained the university over the decades.
“GGU’s legacy,” Fike remarked, “is deeply rooted in the vision of an accessible, transformative education that adapts to the needs of each generation of students.”
Among the many voices that evening, alumni expressed profound appreciation for the impact of their GGU education. Prachi Avsare, MS, MBA ’17, encapsulated the sentiment, sharing, “The exceptional experience at GGU instills the confidence to succeed in any arena.”
In a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Otto Butz, several alumni reminisced about their student days under his leadership. Jean-Luc Sini, MBA ’93, recounted the honor of helping Dr. Butz pack up his office on his final day as president.
“Surrounded by the many awards in his office,” Sini recalled, “I asked which one held the most meaning for him. Without hesitation, he said, ‘Young man, I would give away all these awards just to serve one more year as president of GGU.’”
All the alumni stories will be shared with Dr. Butz’s widow, Velia, who continues to reside in the San Francisco area.
Reflecting on Dr. Butz’s legacy, President Fike added, “Though not a founder, Dr. Butz was a visionary whose leadership transformed GGU during a time of tremendous growth. His contributions are woven into the very fabric of this university, and we remain grateful for his indelible impact.”
Looking toward GGU’s future, Fike highlighted the university’s commitment to advancing its founders’ vision through educational innovation and national expansion. “Our mission ensures that GGU graduates are not only prepared for today’s workforce but equipped to lead in the jobs of tomorrow,” he said.
Fike concluded his address with a call to action: “There are many ways for you to support GGU’s legacy as a cornerstone of higher education in San Francisco. Whether mentoring a student, sharing your expertise, or staying connected with our alumni office, you each have a role in shaping our next chapter.”
