In honor of Women’s History Month, Golden Gate University (GGU) celebrates Melinda A. Dunn, a financial leader whose career reflects the impact of disciplined leadership, strategic oversight, and a deep commitment to supporting institutions that help professionals advance their careers.

Building a Foundation for Financial Leadership

Melinda A. Dunn’s career in finance began with a strong educational foundation and an early interest in how organizations grow and operate responsibly.

Melinda earned her MBA in Finance from Golden Gate University in 1981, joining a community of working professionals seeking practical knowledge they could apply directly in their careers. At GGU, she studied financial management, accounting, and organizational strategy – skills that would become central to her professional journey.

Like many GGU students, Melinda pursued her degree while building her career. The program’s emphasis on real-world application helped prepare her to navigate the increasingly complex financial environments of global organizations.

Her time at GGU established the analytical discipline and strategic perspective that would shape the decades of leadership that followed.

A Career in Global Financial Stewardship

Melinda went on to build a distinguished career in corporate finance and governance. She spent more than two decades at Sequoia Capital, where she served as Global Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer of Sequoia Capital Operations LLC.

In this role, Melinda oversaw the firm’s global financial, legal, and compliance operations across one of the world’s most influential venture capital organizations. Her work required managing complex regulatory frameworks while supporting the firm’s continued growth across international markets.

Before joining Sequoia Capital, Melinda served as Director of Worldwide Accounting at ComputerLand Corporation and began her career in public accounting with Deloitte, where she worked with emerging businesses navigating growth and financial oversight.

Across each stage of her career, Melinda developed a reputation for careful financial stewardship and thoughtful governance.

Leadership in Corporate and Institutional Governance

Beyond her executive career, Melinda has been an active leader in corporate and nonprofit governance. Her experience in finance, compliance, and strategy has made her a trusted advisor to organizations navigating complex operational and regulatory environments.

In 2016, Melinda joined the Golden Gate University Board of Trustees, bringing both professional expertise and personal connection as a GGU alumna. Over the years, she has supported the university through advisory roles, leadership programs, and strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening GGU’s mission of serving working professionals.

Today, as Chair of the Board of Trustees, Melinda helps guide the university through a period of transformation in higher education. Her leadership focuses on ensuring that GGU continues to provide relevant, career-focused programs that meet the needs of today’s students and employers.

A Commitment to Opportunity and Impact

Melinda’s career reflects the importance of financial leadership grounded in responsibility and long-term vision. Whether overseeing global financial operations or guiding institutional strategy, her work has centered on strengthening organizations so they can serve others effectively.

Golden Gate University has an established record of preparing students to apply what they learn directly to their professional lives. Melinda’s journey – from MBA student to global financial executive and university board chair – demonstrates how practical education, combined with professional dedication, can shape a career of leadership and service.
