On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Golden Gate University (GGU) hosted its annual Commencement Ceremony at the iconic Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, a celebration that was as diverse and unique as the graduates it honored. The auditorium buzzed with excitement as families of all sizes, including children of every age, filled the hall, embodying GGU’s deep commitment to serving nontraditional students and working adults.

This year’s ceremony was a festive scene, marked by a rich tapestry of cultural regalia. From decorated caps to flag-bearing stoles and the vibrant Kente cloth stoles, graduates proudly displayed their identities, nationalities, and personal stories. The procession reflected the university’s inclusive spirit, with students hailing from every corner of the globe—many of whom had traveled to San Francisco to walk across the stage in person. Students traveled from countries such as India, China, Canada, Japan, Vietnam, Kuwait, Malaysia, the UAE, and the Philippines, while U.S. students traveled from across the nation, representing over a dozen states and cities throughout California. In total, GGU conferred more than 1,000 degrees in 2025, though not all graduates were able to attend the ceremony in person. More than 500 graduates and their families viewed the ceremony via livestream–now available to view on YouTube.

Past Board Chair’s Remarks

Barbara Mendelson, Past Board Chair of Golden Gate University, offered a heartfelt welcome to the graduates, families, and friends who had gathered for the occasion. “It is an honor to stand before you,” said Mendelson. Her remarks honored GGU’s unique legacy, which began as a night school in 1901 serving San Francisco’s working class. “The spirit of accessibility and inclusivity remains at the heart of GGU today, serving students who balance education with the demands of work, family, and life.”

Mendelson highlighted the university’s transformative impact on its diverse student body, which includes military-connected individuals, first-generation college graduates, and those pursuing second careers. She encouraged graduates to reflect on the values and perseverance that had led them to this point and to carry these qualities forward into their futures.

President’s Address

President Emeritus David Fike, then serving as GGU’s 7th president, followed Mendelson’s remarks with a powerful speech celebrating the hard work and dedication of the Class of 2025. “Today is first and foremost about our students, the candidates for the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. Today we celebrate your perseverance, your commitment, and your resilience,” Fike said, acknowledging the personal and professional challenges many students have overcome to earn their degrees.

Fike also took a moment to explain the symbolism behind the academic regalia worn during the ceremony. “The gowns, hoods, and tassels you wear today represent the years of study and the academic milestones you have achieved. Today’s ceremony is not just a celebration of your academic success, but also a recognition of the lived experiences and determination that shaped your journey.”

Graduate and Undergraduate Speakers

The ceremony featured two inspiring students speakers. Graduate speaker Nana Akua Akyeabea Ampere, who earned her Master of Laws in International Business and Finance Law, shared her journey balancing full-time work with academic achievement. “We are united by our shared unique journeys and commitment to growth and excellence,” Nana reflected. “We have proven that we are adaptable, driven, and capable of thriving in uncertain times.”

Undergraduate speaker Melanie Abuyan Short, a first-generation immigrant from the Philippines, earned her Bachelor’s in Law and a minor in Psychology. Melanie’s speech was a moving reminder of the perseverance required to pursue higher education as an adult learner. “No matter what is stacked against you, we do not let that define us,” she said. “We persevere, and we push forward.”

Keynote Address from Treasurer Fiona Ma

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, a proud GGU alumna, delivered the keynote address, drawing on her personal and professional experiences. Ma, who earned her Master of Science in Taxation at GGU, shared her story of rising from humble beginnings to becoming California’s 34th State Treasurer. “As you move forward, remember: Say yes to opportunities. Go above and beyond. Find mentors. Stay true to your values. And always live with passion and purpose,” Ma encouraged the graduates. “Congratulations to the Class of 2025. Aim high, dream big, and go change the world.”
