A New Chapter: GGU’s First Graduates from China Take Their Place in the Global Alumni Network

Golden Gate University has always been committed to expanding access to higher education, and our innovative GGU Worldwide partnership with Beacon Education––bringing GGU degrees to students studying online from China—serves as a shining example of this mission in action. In January 2025, we proudly celebrated 313 GGU students who completed their degrees through online study in China. The programs, conducted in Mandarin with GGU appointed Global Professors of Practice working alongside our U.S.-based faculty, represent a landmark achievement as the first-ever cohort to graduate from this groundbreaking partnership.

This newest batch of GGU graduates assembled at a festive Zoom gathering on January 10th to commemorate this impressive achievement. GGU Worldwide Founding Dean and Vice Provost for Global Affairs Jay Gonzalez, Beacon Education CEO Michael Wang and Global Beacon Education President Charlie Lannuzzi welcomed attendees. President David Fike addressed the graduates during the online ceremony, emphasizing the significance of their accomplishments: “Completing your degree is a remarkable achievement, and today we welcome you to the global network of Golden Gate University alumni. Your degree represents more than just academic success. It is a powerful tool that will open doors to new opportunities in your career and create positive change for you and your families.”

Provost Bruce Magid also addressed the graduates, offering advice on how to build a successful career. “Focus on what you do better than anyone else and always strive to learn from others and continuously improve. This, along with strong communication skills, will be critical to your professional journey.” Provost Magid’s message reminded the graduates of the importance of ethical decision-making, teamwork, and developing their professional networks, urging them to embrace their new roles as global citizens ready to make a meaningful impact.

The ceremony featured a keynote address from California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, a proud GGU alumna, who reflected on her own journey and shared how the values she learned at GGU shaped her career. “Reflecting on my time at GGU, I can say with certainty that the education and experiences I gained here laid a strong foundation for my career in public service. The values of persistence, adaptability, and collaboration instilled in me at GGU have been guiding principles throughout my journey,” said Ma. “As you move forward into the next chapter of your lives, I encourage you to remain curious, continue learning, and embrace challenges as opportunities to grow.”

Treasurer Ma’s speech espoused the values of global educational partnerships in shaping the future. “Golden Gate University has long been a beacon of opportunity, empowering students from diverse backgrounds to achieve their goals and transform their lives through education,” Ma shared. “As California’s Treasurer, I’ve witnessed firsthand how global partnerships, like the [GGU Worldwide] Partnership, drive innovation and economic growth. The relationships you’ve built and the lessons you’ve learned during this program will be invaluable as you embark on careers in business, finance, and beyond.”

With the skills, knowledge, and global perspective gained through these innovative GGU programs, global GGU graduates are well-positioned to become leaders and innovators, driving positive change in their communities and industries.

As GGU alumni, these newest graduates now join a network of professionals who share a commitment to making a difference in the world. Their achievements are a testament to the power of education to transform lives and bridge cultural divides. As they embark on their next professional chapters, we are confident that they will continue to make an impact—both in their careers and in the global community.

Congratulations to the first cohort of GGU Worldwide graduates who earned their degrees from their home country of China. We are proud of all that you have accomplished, and we look forward to seeing the great things you will achieve in the future.
