This Veterans Day, we celebrate the Helen Diller Center for Veterans of U.S. Military Service at Golden Gate University (GGU), a lifeline for student veterans navigating the transition from military service to academic success. Devon and Todd, two veterans whose lives have been transformed by GGU, share their inspiring journeys.
For Devon, a Chicago native, GGU’s expertise in handling VA education benefits was a game-changer. “It was challenging trying to use my benefits at other schools,” Devon recalled. “Once I applied to GGU, everything was seamless. They understood my benefits, which allowed me to focus on my studies without the usual hurdles.” This smooth transition was invaluable, letting Devon dive into his education with confidence.
Todd, a retired Air Force veteran from Travis Air Force Base, echoed this sentiment. Drawn to GGU for its reputation and proximity, he found confirmation of GGU’s excellence through high praise in his TAP (Transition Assistance Program) classes. “It was a no-brainer. I had to see for myself what GGU could offer,” he shared.
GGU’s commitment to supporting both military and non-traditional students is evident in its flexible programs. “They know many of us have jobs or families. We’re not the typical students going straight from bachelor’s to master’s degrees,” Devon explained. This understanding translates into flexible academic programs that accommodate the unique lifestyles of veteran students.
Todd added that the GGU faculty are adept at balancing these priorities. “The instructors here make it clear what the priorities are. Communication is key—they want us to succeed, and that shows,” he noted, emphasizing how the faculty’s experience enriches the veteran and adult learning experience at GGU.

The center’s dedication and staff have been a cornerstone of Devon and Todd’s journeys. “The Diller Center’s team is amazing—they’re always available and helpful with any concerns I had,” Devon said. This strong support network helps veterans navigate the challenges of academic life, ensuring they stay focused on their goals.
Todd shares similar gratitude for the Diller Center, crediting it as instrumental in his success. “Top-notch support from the instructors and the Diller Center team—it’s a community that understands and uplifts veterans and adult learners,” he remarked.
With GGU as their foundation, both veterans are setting ambitious goals. Devon sees his degree as a bridge to new career opportunities, fueled by the networking resources GGU offers. Todd, meanwhile, is looking to leverage his education to advance professionally, inspire his family, and set an example for future generations. “This degree is about creating career opportunities and supporting my family. I want to be a role model—for my children and for the younger students in my class. At 50, I want to lead by example,” he shared.
