MEET AMY HOFER, OUR NEW RESEARCH INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN

Greetings! I'm Amy Hofer, Research Instruction Librarian. Melissa left some big shoes to fill, but I'm excited to get to know the GGU community and can't wait to start working together to develop our information literacy skills here! You may see me in your class, as a TA on cyber, or at the reference desk, and I hope you will say hello and ask any questions you may have.

I completed my library degree at San Jose State, and last year I had a one-year appointment as Instruction and Research Librarian at Cal State East Bay where I taught a required library skills class. By night I am an old-time fiddler and square-dance caller. I'm also the Volunteer Coordinator for the Berkeley Old-Time Music Convention, coming up Sept 11-14, so drop me a line if you'd like to hear more than you ever imagined possible about old-time music!

MIND MASHUP: $1000 PRIZE FOR YOUR VIDEO

If you have an apple and I have an apple, and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea, and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas. --George Bernard Shaw

SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) challenges students to come up with a 2-minute video illustrating the value of sharing information. Let your creativity run wild as you imagine the possibilities for a world free of barriers to the open exchange of ideas! To enter the contest visit www.sparkyawards.org and let us know if you're getting involved at askalibrarian@ggu.edu. Submissions are due November 30, 2008.

Why does the library care about open access? We pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to subscribe to the databases that provide wonderful and rich information to the Golden Gate University community. Freely available content expands our library's resources far beyond the constraints of our budget, and breaks down the price barrier that keeps important research from the general public. Researchers in developing nations, in particular, stand to gain from open access policies. Authors also benefit from having more people reading, using, and citing their work. Making information freely available to all advances our collective knowledge and understanding, and this is one of the fundamental purposes of the library.

The DATA DOWNLOAD

Industry ratios can be found in several different resources. Keep in mind that different publishers have different measures for industry ratios - when analyzing ratios, you should only use one publisher (such as the Risk Management Association or CCH). If you are having trouble figuring out what the ratios mean or how they are configured, each publisher has a detailed description in the beginning of their printed resource. You can find industry ratios using the following resources available through the GGU library:

Risk Management Association (RMA) ratios can be found in two resources. The first is their print guide, the Annual Statement Studies: Financial Ratio Benchmarks; the most recent volume of this publication is available at the University Library reference desk, while earlier additions are available for library use only and can be found in the reference collection. For online access to the most recent RMA data, look in OneSource. Do a search by industry, select the most appropriate result, and then find the ratio data by clicking the "RMA Industry Norms" link on the leftside menu. CCH publishes the Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios. The most recent edition is available at the University Library reference desk, while earlier editions are available for library use only and can be found in the reference collection.

KNOW YOUR DATABASES

The University Library provides access to several research databases but given how many there are it's often difficult to know which database to use for a specific information need. This article is the third in a series that focuses on a single database and identifies the type of content it provides.

This month: Wilson OmniFile

Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles that cover art, business, education, science & technology, the humanities, the social sciences, law, and library science. Highlights of this database are that it's a great general-purpose destination for nearly any topic.

To access and search Golden Gate University's Wilson OmniFile database, click the "Wilson OmniFile" link on the University Library databases page. Unlike EBSCOhost or ProQuest, there's no need to select a topic-specific database to start searching for research material. With Wilson OmniFile, just type your search terms into the "Find" boxes, choose the desired options (e.g., Subject Area, Limit to, Limit Dates to), and click the Start button.

One of the many useful options available on the search page is the "Document Type" menu. Document types lets you narrow your search to a select type of document, from art reproduction to corporate profile and from product review to film review, just to name a few.

By default, the search results page will display ten items at a time, but you can change it to display 20 or 50 items by clicking the "Records" menu near the top right side of the results page. Click an article's title to read an abstract (a summary of the article) as well as citation information (i.e., author, title, and journal information). To print or view the full text of an article, click the HTML or PDF icon at the top of the page. If the full text of an article is unavailable in Wilson OmniFile, you can click "Search for article" to see if it's available from a different database provider (i.e., ProQuest, EBSCOhost). If the article is not available from another database provider, click "Interlibrary Loan" to request a copy of the article (note: Interlibrary Loan may take several days to process).

If you have any questions about Wilson OmniFile or need help locating information with it, please stop by the reference desk for a demonstration. You can get online help by clicking the Help link at the upper right corner of any Wilson OmniFile web page. A Quick Reference guide is also available via the Wilson web site

TAKING THE CRUNCH OUT OF CRUNCH TIME

Thinking about citation from the very beginning of your research process is a simple way to make deadlines less painful.

Any time you find a source you think you'll use in your project, write down all the information you'll need for a citation if you include it in your final draft.
  • You can easily find the source if you need to look it up again.
  • Writing your reference list will take way less time.
  • Citation tools like RefWorks can help with this, or you can make your own list.
Any time you use a source in your paper, whether it's quoted, paraphrased, or summarized, give it an in-text citation right away.
  • APA in-text citations include the author's last name and the year the work was published, in parentheses. For example: (Smith, 1999).
  • If you quote the source, include the page number as well. For example: (Smith, 1999, p.25).
  • Each work you cite in your text leads the reader to a corresponding entry in the reference list. This also means that if you don't cite a work, it doesn't belong in your reference list.
Why do we cite?
  • Give credit where credit is due.
  • Create a road map back to the source of your information for your reader.
  • Join the discourse of your field by showing how you are building on the work of others who came before you.
The library has resources to help you cite right!
  • Check out our citation guide at http://www.ggu.edu/university_library /research_assistance/research_assistance_ citing_sources and the writing guides we have in the library collection.
  • Attend a workshop on citation at the library.
  • Ask a librarian for help: in person, on the phone, by email, or chat.
Citation is an important part of academic integrity, and we are here to help!

PICTURES ON TOP: Casa Batlló, Parc Güell and La Sagrada Família Cathedral - Bacelona, Spain; on left is the Parc Güell Dragon - all works by Antonio Gaudi. "Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (1852-1926) was a Spanish (Catalan) architect. Though his early works were Mudéjar (Spanish Muslim-Christian) in effect, his work after 1902 eluded all convention. He began to produce "equilibrated" structures able to stand on their own without bracing; his system employed piers and columns that tilt to transmit diagonal forces and thin-shell, laminated-tile vaults. Works such as the Park Güell (1900-14), Casa Milá (1905-10), and Casa Batlló (1904-06) feature undulating surfaces and polychrome decoration (e.g., pieces of broken ceramic). Much of his later career was occupied with the extraordinary church of the Holy Family (Sagrada Familia), still unfinished at his death, in which he transformed the Gothic style into a complex forest of flowing forms and exuberant detail, with spiral-shaped piers, vaults, towers, and a hyperbolic paraboloid roof." (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia).

Among numerous other sources, more on Gaudi can be found at Great Buildings, Answers.com, and imeem which also contains a superb picture playlist on some of Gaudi's extensive work.
